The Waveform Number 26—The Body Issue

The Waveform is a newsletter from Red Cup Agency about the next edge in podcasting. In each issue, I’ll stay on top of things for you. When Red Cup launches a new show or posts an episode that stands out, I’ll drop that into the newsletter.

I’m Lee Schneider, founder and lead producer at Red Cup Agency. Did someone forward this to you, or are you reading it on the web? Subscribe for free.

A note to subscribers: I haven’t been around here much! Podcast production has been all encompassing for the last six months, kind of crazy, actually. But now that we’re in the thick of summer, I intend to take a moment or two to write newsletters. Nice to see you again.

Bodies

It’s been a difficult time for bodies. The pandemic has reminded us of how strong our bodies can be and also how fragile they are. With the fall of Roe v. Wade, women’s bodies are under attack by conservatives using gender politics to advance their agenda.

It’s a good time to bring up two podcasts we’ve worked on that might beam some optimism your way.

Red Cup Agency worked on the pilot for Crossing the Line, a podcast that tells the stories of individuals who must cross state lines to get an abortion. The pilot episode is about a single mom from Texas who turns to her pastor for help, and the church who is helping individuals get the health care they need. Listen to A Prayer for Choice on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

As we come out behind our masks and our Zoom cameras, body image has become real again. Not just for movie stars, TikTok stars, and people in front of any kind of camera, but for everyone. Reframing our preconceived notions of an attractive or “good” body is some work we all need to do.

Start with The Glo Podcast. Storm Marrero, the first Afro-Latina of the Big Apple Circus in New York, is an evangelist for body positivity. Her conversation on The Glo Podcast with guest host Mark Osmundsen will loosen your preconceived notions about bodies.

Listen to Learning Self-Love and Body Positivity, featuring Storm Marrero on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Simplecast, or wherever you like to listen to podcasts.

Works in Progress

I can’t talk about all the Agency’s works in progress. That’s what NDAs are for. But here is a project I’m ready to reveal right now.

For the past few years, I’ve been working on a novel. Along the way, I’ve published five non-fiction books, and written three other novels, but this is the first work of fiction I’ve decided is ready to for the world. It’s called Surrender 2050-2052. I’m in the thick of the production process, checking through the copyeditor’s work and hiring a cover designer and interior graphic designer. It’s exciting, and a little scary. I’m planning a soft launch for friends in the fall, with the public release in February 2023.

In Case You Missed It

In the latest podcast episode of Planet v. Profit, Kirsty Lang interviews Hugo Echeverria, a lawyer who is defending the rights of nature in court, arguing on nature’s behalf against powerful adversaries who see her only as a resource to be exploited. Listen to The Rights of Nature on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

Cheers,

RED CUP SERVICES

 Read Freely.

You can read freely at The Waveform. I’m not tracking opens, clicks, or forwards. I’m not analyzing your IP address location. It’s just you and me, writing and reading. This is a small part of the vast Web focused on people and dialog, not marketing data collection.

Typos.

You might find a few typos! I do everything I can to keep things neat and tidy, but I also want to write freely and keep these newsletters relaxed. Apologies for spelling disasters and other typographical tragedies.
